Summary

Sofia Papaioannou travels to London, Paris and Brussels in an attempt to answer the questions: what keeps Greek spreads high and what part did speculation games play in the Greek financial crisis? “The new Files” sheds light on the shadowy paths of the Greek debt in international stock markets, and discloses how stockbrokers and investment companies “played” with the Greek debt as if it were any ordinary financial product. In Brussels, Sofia Papaioannou meets in an exclusive interview the European Union official who, after the outbreak of the crisis in Greece and the disclosure of the speculation networks, was assigned with finding a life raft for the entire eurozone. “The new Files” also interview analysts from London and New York, who break down and explain the profitable but also “lethal” weapon that is called CDS (credit default swap) and how it helped aggravate Greece’s situation. The program also reveals the actors that profited from the Greek financial crisis, and the part that was played in this course by the world’s largest investment bank, Goldman Sachs. Finally, the “New Files” go over the legendary EU support mechanism and talk to former colleagues of Helmut Kohl and Francois Mitterand to reveal the unknown story of how the Greek debt could have been saved a few years ago, if only Germany and France had not been entangled in the same conflict.
