Summary

In a comprehensive interview for The New Files, Alexis Papahelas speaks with Maria Repousi, head of the team that authored the new 6th grade elementary history book that caused outrage and controversy among political parties, historians and the wider public. Following the book’s withdrawal by the new leadership of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Repousi concedes for the first time that, “the book was not wanted from the start by either the Ministry, nor the Pedagogical Institute”. In response to Alexis Papahelas’s questioning as to whether she had anticipated the reactions the book would provoke, she claims they had been expected but not with the intensity of feeling that characterized the controversy. The New Files traces the course of the uproar over the book and for the first time sheds light on the beginning of the saga, presenting a comprehensive time-line of the ‘crisis’ of the history book.
